Vice President Ma'ruf Amin has expressed the hope that there will be greater participation from voters in the general elections in 2024 compared to 2019.

"What is expected is actually to exceed participation in 2019," he said after attending the Habibie Democracy Forum in Jakarta on Wednesday.

In the 2019 elections, voter participation recorded at 81.93 percent.

He pointed out that higher voter participation would indicate high public awareness regarding the general elections.

"We hope there will be a positive increase in awareness to participate so that the election results are more legitimate, and also attended by a large number (of people). If possible, more than the 2019 General Elections," Amin said.

The Vice President further said that the number of voters affects the recognition of election results. A declining voter percentage can indicate public distrust.

It is also hoped that the 2024 elections will take place in an honest, fair, free, and confidential manner, he added.

As per the records of the General Elections Commission (KPU), at least 204,807,222 voters will be eligible to cast their ballot in the upcoming general elections, which are scheduled to take place on February 14, 2024.

Of the total voters, young voters, comprising the millennial generation and Generation Z, are the dominant group.

According to the KPU, there are more than 113 million voters from the millennial generation and the Generation Z group, or equal to 56.45 percent of the total voters.

In the 2024 General Elections, Indonesians will elect a president and vice president.

In addition, they will also elect the members of the House of Representatives (DPR), the Regional Representative Council (DPD), and the Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the province, city, and district levels.
