The expected meeting between President-elect and chairperson of the Gerindra Party, Prabowo Subianto, and chair of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle, Megawati Soekarnoputri, could bring hope for Indonesia, according to a political communication analyst.

"The meeting between Megawati and Prabowo, if (it) happens, is extraordinary. As the winner of the Presidential Election and the Legislative Election (respectively), the two can bring improvement and goodness to Indonesia," Hendri Satrio said here on Monday.

The expected meeting could be interpreted as the end of the contest between the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) and Prabowo's electoral alliance Indonesia Maju Coalition (KIM) that began during the 2024 presidential election, he explained.

The meeting could also signal that the two parties can work together in the 2024–2029 government.

"If, in this meeting, the two can understand each other that collaboration between them is necessary for the progress of Indonesia, this will be very good," Satrio said.

However, he added, this would not necessarily mean that PDI-P is keen to enter the coalition. The PDI-P, led by Megawati, the fifth Indonesian president, may still collaborate with Prabowo's government, but from outside the circle of power.

Earlier, Gerindra Party Secretary General Ahmad Muzani said that Megawati and Prabowo would meet before the inauguration of the Prabowo-Gibran government on October 20, 2024.

"Hopefully, it will happen before the inauguration," he said at the parliament complex on September 9.

He, however, did not reveal when the meeting would happen.

He said that Prabowo and Megawati had exchanged greetings before.

"Mrs. Megawati just conveyed her respectful greeting to Mr. Prabowo, and Mr. Prabowo also respectfully greeted Mrs. Megawati," he said.

He added that the greetings reflected the mutual respect and hope of the leaders.
