The Papua Office of the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) revealed here on Monday that it continued to monitor the distribution of election logistics in the eastern province's remote areas.

The General Elections Commission (KPU) offices in districts and Jayapura City had begun transporting the election logistics to the KPU offices in subdistricts, Head of the Bawaslu-Papua Office Hardin Halidin remarked.

"According to reports that we received from our colleagues in several regional Bawaslu offices, the KPU offices in several districts had even started transporting the election logistics on Sunday," he stated.

The KPU-regional offices that had begun transporting the logistics to their subdistricts on Sunday were the KPU-Jayapura Office, KPU-Mamberamo Raya Office, KPU-Kepulauan Yapen Office, and KPU-Supiori Office, he noted.

Most of the election logistics would have been transported to other subdistrict areas by vehicles on Monday and Tuesday, he noted, adding that from the subdistricts, the logistics would be distributed to all polling stations prior to the voting day on Feb 14.

Meanwhile, the KPU-Papua Office stated earlier that it needs to allocate a large budget for transporting the election logistics to Papua's nine administrative regions on account of the province's geographical characteristics.

To deliver election logistics to a single polling station, the commission may have to spend around Rp150 million (about US$9,503), according to Head of the KPU-Papua Office Steve Dumbon.

The huge budget is mainly needed due to transportation costs because in order to reach the polling stations in hinterlands and other remote areas, the KPU will have to use charter aircraft or motorboats, he explained.

To complete the delivery, couriers will need to be hired who will carry the election logistics on foot for three days to reach the destinations, Dumbon stated.

Mamberamo Raya is one such district with difficult geographical terrain. Thus, the commission will need to allocate Rp10 billion (some US$633,470) for distributing election logistics, he added.

In Papua, 727,835 registered voters will cast their votes at 3,109 polling stations in the nine administrative regions.

The regions are Jayapura City and the districts of Jayapura, Keerom, Sarmi, Supiori, Biak Numfor, Waropen, Kepulauan Yapen, and Mamberamo Raya.
