Ministry detects 96 election hoax-related issues

The Kominfo Ministry has found 96 general election hoax issues spread in 355 items of content. We have taken down 290 items of content, and the other 65 are still in the process.

The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) identified 96 election hoax-related issues in Indonesia's digital space in the run-up to the 2024 General Elections.

The issues were detected during the period from July 17 to November 26, 2023.

"The Ministry has found 96 general election hoax issues spread in 355 items of content. We have taken down 290 items of content, and the other 65 are still in the process," Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi informed here on Tuesday.

Most of the hoax content was found on Facebook (312 items). Of the total items, the ministry cut off access to 274 items, while action is being pursued against the remaining 38 items.

Election hoax-related content was also detected on other platforms, such as TikTok, 21 items; YouTube, 17 items; Twitter (X), 3 items; and SnackVideo, 2 items.

In response, the ministry cut off access to 4 items of content on TikTok, 10 items on YouTube, 1 item on X, and 1 item on SnackVideo.

Setiadi informed that cooperation with social media platforms has been established and strengthened ahead of the General Elections, which have been scheduled on February 14, 2024, to ensure that the digital space remains free from negative content that could potentially divide society.

"All social media platforms have collaborated and communicated well with us. Starting from Meta, Google, TikTok, they all have the same commitment to jointly protect their platforms with peaceful election narratives," he said.

The minister also invited the public to report questionable content regarding the elections to the digital platform it is posted on or contact his ministry directly through aduankonten.id or the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) through jarimuawasipemilu.bawaslu.go.id.

He also invited the public to share positive content and show their support for their preferred candidates without degrading other candidates.

In the 2024 General Elections, around 204.8 million Indonesians will elect a president and vice president.

In addition, they will select the members of the House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representative Council (DPD), and the Regional Legislative Councils (DPRD) at the province, city, and district levels.
