The West Jakarta Metropolitan Police have pledged to submit the dossiers of all suspects in the recent post-election rioting, which ended in the deaths of nine civilians, to the public prosecutor immediately.
"The suspects and their dossiers will be handed over to the public prosecutor this week or, at the latest, next week," the West Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesman, Commissioner Martson Marbun, told journalists here on Thursday.
None of the suspects' detention was suspended. Instead, they were all to be handed over to the public prosecutor at the same time, he said.
In connection with this deadly post-election rioting, the police arrested more than 180 suspects. They came from various areas outside Jakarta, such as Banten, West Java, Central Java, and the provinces in Sumatra Island.
Among the suspects that the police nabbed were those allegedly involving in instigating riots and attacking a police dormitory in the Petamburan area, Central Jakarta.
Regarding this May's post-election rioting, Amnesty International Indonesia divulged that a dozen personnel of the Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) allegedly committed acts of physical violence against the demonstrators and people they arrested in Kampung Bali, Central Jakarta.
Papang Hidayat, the Amnesty International Indonesia researcher, told journalists recently that his team was deployed in Kampung Bali (Bali Village) to investigate and corroborate the truth behind a video showing Brimob personnel torturing people. The video had gone viral on May 23, 2019.
"We identified four victims in Kampung Bali in the act of violence that took place there at around 5:30 a.m. local time," he remarked, adding that during that time, the Brimob personnel swept the area and ordered a worker of a parking area to open the parking lot gate on May 23, 2019.
The post-election rioting erupted after the KPU officially declared the final results of the recent parliamentary and presidential elections on May 21, 2019, confirming the victory of the Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Ma'ruf Amin pair.
Nine people died in the rioting, the police reported.
The demonstrators voiced their disapproval in front of the Elections Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) Office in Central Jakarta, as they believed massive fraud had been committed during the presidential elections, the results of which were officially announced at the KPU's plenary session on May 21.
